What has been up with all the wind? Good grief! As a dog, I enjoy when scents are swirled around in the air for me to smell, but even I’ve had enough with the crazy wind! We headed up north in hopes to find a spot out of it: The Agua Fria National Monument.
Road construction has certainly been an issue lately with many roads being repaired and repaved. We had to go the back way to Anthem in order to get on I-17 north this weekend, so always check ADOT for road conditions and/or status before heading out. We didn’t go too far north and exited on to Badger Springs or exit 256 off I-17. You take a right or head east for just a little bit down a dirt road until you come to a big parking lot.
Parking is free and it has a human restroom. We have been here before, and I was excited because it meant I would get to swim. The temperatures were mild, especially for May. Thank Dog above we aren’t as hot as last year! We started hiking the sandy trail toward the river, which is just under one mile. The trail is very easy but can be difficult to follow. The good news is that all paths lead to the water!
Several other humans and their dogs had the same idea, but when we all arrived, there was no water. I mean no river at all! What happened? Dad looked up on his phone, and apparently this river is contingent upon rain. I guess we have always hit it during wet seasons, but man, it was sad.
Aqua Fria in Spanish means “cold water,” and the little mud hole that was left was refreshing, but there wasn’t any swimming going on. Kids couldn’t use the tire swing, and we all walked around dazed. Usually, the river is breaking over the rocks and is several feet deep. Our outing quickly became a picnic, and we the lunch mom made for us.
Instead of swimming, we enjoyed the shade of a big tree and listened to the sounds of nature. Even though this area is right off the freeway, it is very wild. You truly feel like you are in the middle of nowhere! We had to laugh every time a new group of people arrived, they would all say the same thing, “Where’s the river?” I guess even rivers need a break now and then, and it decided to go on vacation. We do hope it returns!
So, if you are looking for a place to cool off this summer, the Aqua Fria is probably not where you want to go this year. Mom and dad have been to Lake Pleasant several times this spring, and it is beyond full.
Dad forgot to pack the hammock, so after a spell, we packed it up and hiked out. This adventure didn’t turn out like we expected, but we were outside. The wind wasn’t bad, either. No TV’s or technology – just nature. Any time we do that, it’s a good day.
