I hope all the Dads had a great Father’s Day weekend! We kept it low key here. As I mentioned last week, I’m behind on blogging! Mom and Dad went to Southern Utah over the Memorial Day weekend and enjoyed the St. George area. I’ve been before, so I can reminisce in my mind.
If you haven’t been, St. George sits at 2,697 feet in the south-western corner of Utah and is surrounded by beautiful red rock. It is considered desert like Phoenix, but it consistently runs about 10 degrees cooler. It is about an eight-hour drive from North Phoenix, but you lose an hour this time of year since they are on mountain time.
NOTE: If you drive, the Cameron Gift Shop & Restaurant is an excellent place to stop for lunch and to stretch your legs. Mom buys something every single time she goes there as they have very unique gifts. You can chose to go through Las Vegas, but it isn’t as pretty. Mom and Dad love to stop at Kanab, about 1 ½ hours outside of St. George. I love that town: very quaint and friendly.
A friend suggested the Anasazi trail because of the petroglyphs. It is a 1.1 mile out and back, well-maintained trail. Although it is considered moderate, Mom and Dad found it very easy.
Just like in Phoenix, the temps can rise. Always bring plenty of water with you when hiking. You can
always bring it back if you don’t use it. This trail is popular and can get busy, but it was quiet, especially for a holiday weekend. Several folks mentioned the weekend just wasn’t that busy compared to years past. I guess since I didn’t go, why bother, right? Ha…
The trail gradually goes up on to a ridge. It is dry, dusty, and the trail does not have any shade. For desert dwellers like my Mom and Dad, no big deal. If you aren’t used to the heat, you will want to go early in the morning to beat the heat. Dogs are welcome, but you have to be careful about our paws in the hot season.
As you get closer to the edge of the ridge, you will start seeing “pictures” on the rocks. Dad is convinced these were young rebellious teenagers who defaced nature with their graffiti! No one can tell you what any of it says, so who knows. Still, they have passed the test of time.
The hike only took 40 minutes, so Mom and Dad decided to take a drive around the St. George area. Man, has it grown! The area is booming with growth and building. Way down on the south end of town is Sand Hollow Lake. Very pretty! I would have jumped in for a swim.
St. George has all the shopping and restaurants you can imagine. Mom had a gift card for Olive Garden
so that’s what they chose. The same gal who served them in February was there and remembered them. Dad mentioned how Mom passed her exam and how they were celebrating. They gave her a very yummy dessert. Everyone is super friendly in Utah.
Next time, I’ll share about north of St. George in the Cedar City area. It’s even cooler as it sits at 5,846 feet. I know Mom misses me on adventures, but frankly, I’m okay being at home with my brother. I don’t see very good anymore, and I move slowly. I’m still happy, love life, and am grateful for my family. A day at a time!
My mom, Lorraine Bossé-Smith, is kind enough to help me share my Great Adventures, big and small. My mom is a motivational speaker, corporate trainer, executive recruiter, business consultant, coach, fitness expert, and author of nine published books. More importantly, she’s the best doggy mom ever!
