When my husband and I moved from Houston, Texas just over two years ago, we traded in mosquitoes for scorpions and hurricanes for monsoons! I am grateful we didn’t have to endure Hurricane Harvey, and I send hugs and well wishes to all who have suffered great loss.
Shortly after settling into Phoenix, I was out playing tennis shortly, and I kept getting hit by balls. I’m certainly not a 4.5 player like I used to be when I competed, but I’m a solid 3.5 with glimpses of 4.0. BAM! I was hit again and again. BAM! My opponent profusely apologized, and I left the court frustrated and ticked off—not to mention bruised physically and mentally. It’s one thing to lose to a better player, but it is an entirely differently story to lose by not returning the ball. Insert words here that I won’t repeat.
I made an appointment with an optometrist right away and asked WHAT THE HECK? Thankfully, I wasn’t going blind nor had I lost all my motor skills. I had the wrong contacts. Apparently, they are all made of different product, and the ones that worked in Houston’s humid climate to help my eyes dry out were shriveling up and popping off my eyes balls here in the desert. No wonder I was being attacked by the ball!
With the new contacts in, I was able to see the ball coming (what a concept) and actually return it. Yes, I creamed him, thank you very much! My reputation was restored.
In order to succeed, we need the right equipment
This got me thinking: In order to win at any sport, we must have the right equipment, but all the equipment in the world won’t compensate for poor health.
One of my advantages on the tennis courts is my aerobic capacity. I’m notorious for running opponents front, back, and side to side…repeat. They get winded and eventually make an error. I, on the other hand, don’t get winded easily due to aerobic conditioning through kickboxing, spin classes, running, hiking, and strength training. Now that doesn’t mean I don’t make mistakes, but at least it isn’t from a lack of conditioning.
What’s limiting your success?
How about you? Is your health limiting your game? Your career? Your life? You certainly want to have the right equipment to take on any challenge, but without your health, you’ll be like me getting waylaid with tennis balls. You’ll be frustrated, discoursed, bruised, and you won’t be winning. In order to succeed, you need good health. Time to take your game to the next level!
