Sorry I missed writing something last week, but Mom and Dad were just returning from a getaway trip to Southern Utah. Mowgli and I stayed behind, but Mom made sure I had something to share: The Best Friends Animal Sanctuary in Kanab, UT.
We just love Southern Utah, and we wanted to stop by the animal sanctuary on our last trip, but we ran out of time. Best Friends is located at 5001 Angel Canyon Road, Kanab UT 84741. They exist to provide refuge to all sorts of animals with nowhere else to turn. They are the largest no-kill sanctuary for companion animals! They house hundreds of dogs, cats, birds, bunnies, horses, pigs, and other barnyard animals.
What is unique about this refuge for animals is humans are welcome—encouraged even—to visit. Mom and Dad took the scenic drive through and stopped to see dogs, cats, and horses, but the place is huge…thousands of gorgeous red-rock acres. Entrance is free, but they appreciate donations as they can’t operate without the help of generous donations to feed all the animals. Countless volunteers work tirelessly every day to care for all the critters. And yes, you can volunteer during your visit! They are happy to put you to work for as long or short as you can afford.
Besides a beautiful drive, several hikes are available. You can get information at the visitor’s center. If
you come in at the south entrance, you can do a drive through and come out on the north entrance…both of which come off highway #89. They also have camp sites and RV spots for those who wish to spend more time. Check online: bestfriends.org.
Dad said if he was a horse, he would want to live at the sanctuary. They have so much room to roam and be free! The dogs and cats have ample places to play and explore, and every animal takes turns in the human visitation rooms where they get loved, adored, petted, and maybe even adopted. Mowgli and I won’t hold it against them for spending time with other animals…well, maybe a little bit.
You could truly spend the entire day, including having lunch at Angel Village Café. Kids will love all the petting areas with a wide variety of animals. Since this is a no-kill refuge, some animals have spent the rest of their days here, so they have a tranquil cemetery and gratitude garden in remembrance. Best Friends works with shelters and rescue groups across the country. The drive from Phoenix is only about six hours, but if you can’t make it out in person, you can always support them financially. Mowgli and I are extremely grateful we have such a good
home with a loving family. No animal should suffer. We were encouraged to know people like Best Friends are out there saving and loving the lost and forgotten animals. They always have ones up for adoption, don’t forget!
