Hello dear readers! I’m sorry I didn’t post a blog last week, but we just took a Christmas trip to Show Low, Arizona, and we’ll have several blogs to share from it. Before I jump in, I’m pleased to report that my ankle is doing much better. Mom and dad took me to another vet for a second opinion as the new vet at Sonoran Foothills Pet Clinic is all about drugs, and her staff is rude. Boy, do we miss Dr. Grossman!
We got several ideas of how to treat it, and Dad has been taping my foot, which reduced the swelling. Mom got me an all-natural supplement for joints to add to my routine, so we all hope that offers some improvement as well since I did not tolerate the drugs well. Anyway, on the mend, and we are grateful.
Show Low is located in Eastern Arizona closer to the New Mexico border. It sits about 6,400 feet high on the Mogollon Rim. We drove to Fountain Hills and connected to the 260, and once we gained altitude, we saw snow…awoof! As we climbed, the temperature dropped, and Mom had to put more layers on. Ha! What she does for me.
The drive is 3 ½ hours, so by the time we arrived, we were ready for lunch. We drove straight to Bertie’s in downtown Show Low. I didn’t get to go in, but Mom and Dad said it was very good. Mom’s sandwich was huge, and she could only eat half. I would have gladly polished the rest of that roast beef off for her, but my stomach is more sensitive to human foods these days. Boo. Bertie’s serves breakfast, lunch, candy, cupcakes, and ice cream. Note: They close for the month of January.
From downtown, we headed over to the Day’s Inn. Mom and I stayed here in February and enjoyed our stay. The staff are friendly, and this time, we got an upgraded room on the second floor. I had to take the back stairs, though, as I don’t like the metal ridges. This place is bigger than you think! Anyway, the room was clean and met my approval, and they offer a real breakfast at the Show Low Café each morning.
We dumped our things and decided to take Dad on the Show Low Meadow/Bluff path: 769 S. White Mountain Road. This is a local favorite with plenty of parking and human restrooms, and it is free! The paved path follows Show Low Creek and goes for a couple of miles. No one was fishing today as it was pretty chilly, but we enjoyed the scenery.
After a good stretch, Dad wanted to see the “purple haze” in Snowflake, about 20 minutes from Show Low. What in the world is a purple haze? Good question! Me and mom didn’t know, but Dad had read about it. A marijuana plant moved into the area, and they use a pink lamp on the plants to keep them warm. At night, it emulates a purple color into the night sky. Well since that is Mom’s favorite color, she was game! All I know is it smelled funny.
We came, we saw, and then we went to Trapper’s in Snowflake for dinner. It was a bust! Worst chicken-fried steak Dad ever had, and Mom’s baked potato was hard as a rock…not cooked and cold. No need to go back. I settled for my duck and green beans canned food. I think I had the better meal.

When we returned to the room, we realized the heat was not turned on. It was three degrees that night, so Mom wore every layer she had until the room warmed up. I was good and slept like a baby. I’m made for the cold!
I was already a very happy boy. Laying low is not my style, and I have been blue. I couldn’t wait until the next day to see what adventures awaited me. You will have to wait until next week to read about them! Until then, enjoy all your Christmas moments, big and small. I’ll put in a good word with Santa for you. Ho ho ho
