For the first time in American history, we are seeing a trend to conform rather than be unique. We have been a country as diverse as the innovations we create; yet, there is a push for us all to look alike, most alarming, to think alike. Under the guise of tolerance, there is a one-sided conversation going on, and our social media platforms and media are silencing those who do not speak their message. The danger is that conformity kills creativity!
Corporate America please wake up! No one wins when we have one-sided conversations. No one grows, and new ideas will be stifled. CEOs, presidents and high-level managers need to pay attention to what their marketing and HR departments are doing. If they are on board with woke policies, you could lose the farm. It is not sustainable nor is it what will grow your company.
As a marketing professional, I can tell you that the key isn’t listening to the voices of all but rather your customers. The fact is that the majority of those who are vocal on social media are NOT the ones with the money to actually buy your products are services. Those people are busy earning their living and can’t be bothered with trivial matters.
As I look at Twitter, I see an entire population exiting because they are being shut down. This is not progress but censorship. What happened to “You do you, and I do me?” If you don’t like seeing something, don’t look! If you don’t like a book or movie, don’t read or watch it. We cannot erase everything nor should we.
We are on a slippery slope, and if we do not wake up, we will lose our competitive edge. We will walk, talk, think and look alike. We will have killed creativity and all the solutions that come from it. America’s best thought for themselves. They defied the odds and overcame obstacles. I pray we can quiet the noise, focus on what is important, and get back on track to what drives business.
