I was geared up and ready to go for my morning run when my husband gave me a kiss to say goodbye as he headed out to work. With a twinkle in his eye, he said, “You look like a warrior ready to head into battle.” I chuckled as I looked at myself. I had my headband on, my utility belt with pepper spray and multi-use tool that includes a knife and pliers, my water bottle belt, cell phone, and MP3 player. As I hit the pavement with the dog in tow, I pondered his statement and concluded he was right.
You see, I’ve been through hell several times now, fighting for my life. Some wars were abusive relationships while others were illness assaults. I’ve had business peers screw me over, clients break contracts, and bosses sexually harass me. So yes, I tend to gear up and prepare for battle. But you know what? All of the wars I have fought have made me one tough lady!
Like many people, I thoroughly enjoyed the new Wonder Woman movie. She starts off so idealistic and naïve, but life quickly knocks the wind out of her. She has a choice to cower, retreat, and sink into a hole of self pity, or she can fight—and fight she does! Like the Facebook post says, “I rather look like Wonder Woman than Barbie.” Indeed! I also would rather be like Wonder Woman than Barbie.
You may not have had to fight to conquer an incurable disease like me, but we all have battles raging against us every day: laziness, mediocrity, complacency, narcissism, self-centeredness, racism, self- righteousness, and the list goes on. With more than half of the population being overweight, we apparently are losing the war. We are settling in our lives, and we don’t even recognize it.
One of the principles that got me through my ordeals was having faith…believing I was intended for more than suffering in pain for the rest of my life. Having faith wasn’t enough, however; I had to actually take action. I had to fight, and fight I did! Are you geared up and ready for battle? If you aren’t, then you truly will lose out on a better, healthier, more fulfilled, and successful life—one designed for you.
If you haven’t watched Wonder Woman yet, I encouraged you to do so. I believe you will be inspired to take on life’s challenges head on fiercely. You can also get a copy of my booklet, Defy Your Diagnosis where you will gain tools that equip you to defeat your enemy, whatever that might be. Find your inner warrior!
