I am certified in DISC and have been using it as the foundation of my coaching, consulting, and training for 25 years. I’ve conducted and debriefed thousands of reports, and I never believe in a one-size-fits-all approach to anything. COVID-19 is no exception. In fact, as I sit in my home office—which I have operated out of long before it was cool—and watch the different personalities play out, I am fascinated. I am also reminded that we have all been impacted by COVID-19 but in different ways. Therefore, each of us have different needs and will require unique steps and measures in order to move forward.
As an employer and/or leader, you cannot afford to ignore the temperaments of your employees as you begin to get your business back on track. Missteps can result in disharmony and can increase fears and stress rather than alleviate them. It is critical to understand your people so that you can guide them forward, and that’s where I come in. I can coach and help you. To start, I thought I would share some insights into each style’s fears, stress reactions, and how this plays out in the workplace. We must start first by acknowledging where people are and how COVID-19 has affected them. Next week, I will share ways you can help each style recover, recharge, and re-engage in the workplace.
If you are not familiar with DISC, let me quickly share each of the styles: D = Dominant, driven doers. I like to call them Commanders. I = Interactive, involved influencers. Or Coaches. S = Structured, stable supporters. Or Counselors. C = Correct, cautious calculators. Or Conductors. I don’t have time to share all the in’s and out’s here, but know this: each of us is a combination of all four. The magic happens when we discover your primary personality trait and look at your unique blend to help us understand how you approach decisions, interactions, pace, and details (D-I-S-C respectively). Whether you are aware of your temperament or not, it is influencing everything you do from how you communicate to your leadership style to how you exercise and what you eat! Let’s put this into perspective of COVID-19. Each style has different fears and will handle stress in their own way. Commanders don’t like losing, and they fear being taken advantage of by others. Their stress reaction is often open hostility, and they aren’t afraid to debate with anyone for any reason. COVID-19 has taken away their right to choose and their ability to win. Ouch! Without proper attention to recovering, your Commanders will be extremely impatient and will be direct and assertive…aka they will steam roll over everyone and not look back!
NOTE: We ALL have positives and negatives associated with our unique wiring. Please don’t judge any other style. We are all human, and when we are under duress, we can all display “ugly heads” that are not flattering. As leaders, it is up to us to see these signs and provide the necessary recovery and resources for each style to confidently take steps forward.
Coaches are social beings, and they fear rejection and loss of connection. Their stress reaction is emotional outbursts, and they can quickly accuse, blame, and throw others under the bus. COVID-19 stole their ability to interact in person with others. Yikes! Without proper attention to recovering, Coaches will become even more disorganized – in thought and in behavior – and scatter brained.
Counselors DO NOT like change. Bless their hearts – we have had nothing BUT change, daily and sometimes moment by moment. They fear any confrontation or disruption to their routine. Their stress reaction is completely shutting down, withdrawing and even excessive sleeping/depression. COVID-19 has turned their world upside down with no signs of stopping. Good gravy! Without proper attention to recovering, Counselors will become very possessive in an attempt to control something – anything!
Conductors need and seek correctness, and they demand details. They fear irrational behavior and antagonism. Their stress reaction is criticism. They often get paralyzed by analyzing to the nth degree in an attempt to find the truth. COVID-19 came as an unknown, and it has made it impossible for them to know who / what is true, right, correct…yet. Ugh! Without proper attention to recovering, Conductors will obsess over every-little-detail and offer nothing but criticism to all involved.
Just in this quick overview, can you see why we all don’t look the same during COVID-19? I hope we have less judgement of one another and extend more grace. The fact is COVID-19 is affecting us all, and in order to move forward, we are going to have to create unique strategies that fit the individuals.
