Albert Einstein is said to have quipped that the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again but expecting different results. Boy, does this apply to a lot going on right now! For today, however, I am referencing it and your health because if you truly want a healthier lifestyle, you WILL need to do things differently. It starts with first asking these questions and answering them honestly:
- Am I willing to admit I have room for improvement?
- Am I willing to make the necessary changes?
- Am I willing to try new strategies and techniques?
- Am I willing to commit and take action?
As a personal trainer and fitness instructor, I would say the number one excuse people give me for not working out is a lack of time. Don’t kid yourself – it is an excuse. We are all given the same amount of time, yet plenty of people find the time to exercise. It boils down to making your health a priority.
“If you want to make good use of your time,
you’ve got to know what’s most important and then give it all your best.”
Lee Iacocca
Too often, people come to a personal trainer as a last resort, meaning they have gained so much weight they cannot ignore it any longer. Many times, clients have come to me in despair with a health crisis. Their doctor told them if they don’t change their ways, they will be on expensive drugs, incur illness and disease, and possibly premature death. They finally decided to make their health a priority.
I hope you don’t wait that long. I pray COVID-19 woke us up and reminded us that our health is our responsibility. The better condition we are in, the more equipped we are to ward off ANY virus, illness or disease. That being said, I do understand how difficult it can be to actually find that time in your full schedule.
Since Webster’s dictionary defines time as “a continuum in which events succeed one another from past through present to future,”, ‘time’ is simply a concept used to measure a series or succession of events. That means our lives are made up of series of events. If we want to get more done, to experience less stress, and enjoy greater productivity, control, security, order or even variety in our lives, then we must control the events that make up the time in our life.
I encourage people to start by carving out 30 minutes a day to use toward their health. I don’t care how busy you are, you ARE wasting at least that much time every day. I’d go as far as to say most people spend hours on useless, no-value-add activities like watching TV, scrolling through social media or playing video games. Sure, you might need some down time, but hours and hours?
Cut back just 30 minutes a day on something you know you spend too much time on, and commit that time to your health. Treat this time like any other important meeting by blocking out the time on your calendar and protecting it. Then, have a Plan B because you know life will happen. As an outdoor person, I always have a Plan B in case the weather doesn’t cooperate. I’m not off the hook – I just do something different.
You will only be as successful as your commitment, so understand why you decided to embark on a health quest. For me, my parents and all their siblings died extremely young of cancer (all kinds), and I want to beat the odds! Every day, I remember the short life they had due to an unhealthy lifestyle and use it to motivate me to exercise even when I don’t feel like it.
