Boy, do we put our value on the wrong things. Professional sports get paid millions of dollars while fitness instructors and personal trainers don’t cover their expenses. Perhaps you can’t tell your gym to pay us more, but you can remind them of the positive changes they make in your life and submit comment cards with words of appreciation.
The safe, effective, and fun fitness classes you take are saving you tons of money on medications you won’t need. I can’t tell you the countless people I’ve helped get off of high blood pressure and diabetes medicine because they got healthy exercising! If you haven’t noticed, prescription drugs are outrageously expensive these days. By attending these classes on a regular basis, you are avoiding going to the hospital. If something should happen, you are in a much better position to fight and win the battle. I always say, we are keeping ourselves healthy for the “what ifs” of life because we have no control over about 30 percent of our aging process. Why not be in the best shape possible?
Exercising reduces the times you get sick, and when you do catch a bug, your body can fight it off quicker. Believe it or not, your energy increases and your stress decreases with regular exercise. None of us has a guarantee of tomorrow, but the stronger and healthier you are, chances are you will extend your life expectancy.
Many of the insurance companies have moved to rewarding good health. They measure your vitals and some standard testing, and if you are healthy, you get discounts on your policy. Look at all the money we are saving you!
I wish we would put a higher value to those who dedicate their lives to helping others, but we don’t. Look for real ways you can show your appreciation to those who invest in your future. Here’s to being Forever Fit in 2023!
I know it has been out for a while, but the animated movie, Horton Hears a Who with Jim Carrey as Horton, has an important lesson for us. The premise of the Dr. Seuss story is that Horton the Elephant picks up a dandelion flower and hears voices. He isn’t going crazy, although his community of other animals doesn’t believe him; no, he hears Whos in Whoville. They are so small that their entire planet is just a speck on a flower.
Much of the movie is spent on how Horton protects the speck of Whos. At great personal cost, he will not let anything happen to them. What ties into today’s climate is the silencing of voices. Played by Carol Burnett, a Kangaroo tries to kill Horton for lying. She gets all the animals to shut him out and “unfriend” him. Wow. How prophetic! We live in a time where one person can decide what truth is and shut down everyone else who thinks differently. The mob mentality is real and extremely dangerous.
In the process of attacking Horton, the animals are trying to silence the Whos. The Mayer, played by Steve Carroll, faces his own challenges of getting the citizens of Whoville to believe him. In essence, the entire world is trying to silence both Horton and the Whos I resonate and know I am not alone. Countless middle-aged workers can’t get hired. We are capable, willing, and able to work, and we will actually show up! I’m pretty sure we’d run circles around most if we were just given the chance. Instead, we are being ignored and canceled. This movie made me want to gather us all together and scream in unison: WE ARE HERE! WE ARE HERE!
Like the Whos, we may have to be creative in how we strengthen and increase the volume of our voices, but we must not give up. Too many of us feel isolated and alone, and I believe this is contributing to our stress, leaving us overwhelmed. That, my friends, is work of the devil. God forgive them for they know not what they are doing! We cannot give in and remain silent. We are children of God, and we know the truth! And even though the world may be silencing us, God hears the quietest of whispers. He knows our hearts, our hurts, and He is our advocate, fighting on our behalf. We ARE here!
Another year is here! How productive were you last year? Did you accomplish everything you wanted both personally and professionally? If not, I’d encourage you to do a root cause analysis that helps you identify what prevented you from reaching your goals.
When you narrow down the culprit, then you must commit to doing things differently and better, or you will have a repeat this year. Two major causes of missed goals are poor productivity and a lack of time management. They go hand in hand because it is nearly impossible to be productive if you aren’t managing your time efficiently.
Even if you are doing a decent job with your time, spending energy on the right things matters. Not everything is a priority, and you need to discern between important and urgent. Two resources that help in this area are my booklets, Mastering Time Management, and Tackling Time Traps. They are inexpensive and will save you heartache and disappointment. Set yourself up for success this year!
