I love this quote: “We don’t sit in meditation to become good meditators. We sit in meditation so that we will be more awake in our lives.” (Pema Chődrőn – Comfortable with Uncertainty). There it is, and it is why so many people struggle with simply being. We are a country of doers, shakers, movers and high achievers. We want to conquer and master everything, but meditation is not to be perfected. Rather, it is a practice.
I had a gentleman enter my yoga class who had a huge ego and let me know how great he was at yoga. “Um, okay.” Well, within eight minutes, he was squirming, fidgeting and unable to sit still. He may be able to hold some asanas, but he most certainly didn’t know how to just be. He isn’t alone. Our culture isn’t one of slowing down but of speeding up.
The health benefits of sitting still, breathing and meditating are too long to list, but I can tell you this, you will feel better. Aches and pains will disappear not just because you stretched but because you let go over everything else for a short period of time. If you truly practice meditating, you push everything else away and focus on your breath – being in the here and now.
We zoom from one commitment to another, not giving ourselves a chance to catch our breath and then wonder why we feel awful. Meditation is easy, cheap and can be done anywhere. If you are a beginner, just practice breathing deep and fully, exhaling completely. Being alone with our own thoughts and feelings can be overwhelming at first because we usually try to avoid them, hide them or suppress them. We seek progress, not progression. The best in me honors the best in you!
You’ve heard me say “Follow the money” many times because we need to be informed consumers and citizens. When we dig deep to uncover who is funding research or products, we will see the true motive. We can then make intelligent decisions. I want to add to that to also “Follow the Power.” COVID-19 has been politicized beyond comprehension, and we are all left confused. If you don’t think a battle for power doesn’t exist, then you haven’t been paying attention. Whoever controls the citizens holds all the power, and the fear of COVID-19 has been their weapon.
If I hear one more time, “follow the science,” I will puke my guts out. The same science that told us the world was flat? Yes, those same people (people in power) adamantly believed the world was flat, and those who began to speak about it being round were shamed, ridiculed, blacklisted, blackballed and in some cases, put in prison. Does this sound familiar? It certainly should!
If you disagree on social media and have a difficult view point—one based on facts not feelings—you will not only be bullied but may even be completely canceled. Entire organizations exist who scroll through our media posts to look for “divergent” and then seek out to destroy their reputation and their life. If this doesn’t alarm you, I don’t know what to say.
When power is given to the few, deceit and control surely follows. Truth is for all and does not seek power. The choice is ours. Follow both the money and the power, and you just might find that science is more fiction than fact.
Recruiting new employees is one of the most critical aspects of your human resource department, yet, it is often given to the lowest-level employee who usually doesn’t even understand the role, it’s functions or terminology. When these ill-equipped people contact potential employees, they are sending the wrong message. First impressions matter!
If you don’t have the staff to recruit, contract it out! Allow professional like me to handle it properly – not asking an executive about their high school diploma. If you are relying on Indeed, Zip Recruiter, Career Building and the like without supervision, you ARE missing the best candidates.
If I had a dollar for every horrible job positing with errors and wrong parameters for the job, I would be a millionaire. Why? Because the wrong people are posting the jobs. Again, it should not be your generalist or a part-time intern. Your company’s reputation is on the line here, and it may be going down the tubes and you don’t even know it because people are not applying.
With VP-level corporate experience and a wide-range of jobs and consulting projects, I understand most positions extremely well. I can have intelligent, productive discussions that paint your company in a positive light. I will recruit the right person to fit your company and culture, and I’ll do it fast! Even you don’t contract it out, then for goodness’ sake, hire a full-time, professional, experienced recruiter!
