I hope you had a nice Easter. The news folks said it was the first rainy one in 25 years here in Phoenix. Being born in Colorado, I have seen spring seasons like this where one day is warm and the next cold. We call it weather whiplash! Crazy indeed, and the rain keeps coming. We got almost another inch just last night.
Before I jump into our recent hike at Deem Hills, I want to make an announcement. Mom is working on becoming a certified nutritional coach to add to her wellness arsenal, but it is a quite complex and extensive online course. It is becoming time consuming, and she let me know we will have to take a sabbatical from my blogs for a while so she can concentrate and focus her energies on it.
I know, I will miss you, too! However, I will still post to Facebook and
Instagram. I just won’t be able to share our great adventures with you just yet. We appreciate your understanding. On to a recent hike at Deem Hills. We park at the free, small lot at 39th Avenue. Although they cleaned it up and have a nice pavilion, you won’t find any human restrooms here.
The day was typical spring with black skies and was threatening to rain. We didn’t get wet, but the wind was definitely chilly. Instead of our usual 3.5 mile loop up the mountain, we went straight and crossed the road. I believe it is the Circumference Trail that goes the long way around and then up the other side. If you were to do that entire trail, it is 5.7 miles. Check the map when you get there. You have several options.
We chose this because it is a flat, dirt path for about a mile (turns rocky after that). I do better with less rocks. We planned an out and back for the day. Everything is so green! Once the sun comes out for good, I think we will have a wildflower explosion! For now, you will still see some pretty colors.
We didn’t see too many people. I think the threat of rain kept people away. We are okay with quiet and went to the mile mark. From there, it gets rocky and climbs up. We turned around to head back.
Since I walk slower, short hikes take longer. I’m grateful Mom and Dad are patient with me. They are the best! Deem Hills is a unique area with the lava rocks. Even though it is in the middle of a ton of housing
developments, you immediately are in the wild.
As soon as the temperatures rise a little and we have some sunny days, you can expect Deem Hills to pop. You can take a short or long hike…easy or moderate. You pick! Okay, until we meet again.
My mom, Lorraine Bossé-Smith, is kind enough to help me share my Great Adventures, big and small. My mom is a motivational speaker, corporate trainer, executive recruiter, business consultant, coach, fitness expert, and author of nine published books. More importantly, she’s the best doggy mom ever!
