Arthur Burke (https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLbCRokqIHY9VWkPvmvBwqfcNtq-aEvW78) predicted it over 15 years ago, and here we are in 2021 with everyone desperately seeking legitimacy in all the wrong places. We are now requiring low-wage jobs to have Master’s degrees, and we have a certificate program for just about anything out there. You may have a degree and several certificates, but is it the right ones? Probably not. And if you only have a couple of Master’s degrees, you’re falling behind. It’s no wonder so many people feel utterly worthless.
This vicious cycle of striving to obtain more credentials finds it roots in walking away from God. The further away from our spiritual self we go, the less loved we feel. We then seek to feel important, needed, and loved in ways that will never fill the void. You see, God’s creation of us IS enough. WE are enough simply because He loved us enough to make us. Period. When we embrace, accept and understand this simple yet profound truth, we know we are legitimate. We don’t need to chase after titles and degrees.
We are truly in a spiritual battle. Satan wants us to feel defeated and unworthy. He pushes us to pursue legitimacy in all the wrong places to keep us distracted from the truth. To think we are loved regardless of our affiliations, certificates, trainings, titles and degrees seems ridiculous. Surely it isn’t that simple, is it? Yes! Unfortunately, as foretold in the Bible, what is wrong is right and what is right is now wrong. We can’t see the truth right in front of our face because we are buying into the lies.
The more beaten down and defeated we feel, the more we seek other ways to feel legitimate, and the further away from God we become. Thankfully, no matter how far away we get from God, He speaks to us. We need only listen. He is for us and with us.
I’m not saying all credentials, certificates or degrees are bad. Heck, I have a Bachelor’s Degree and multiple certifications. However, the difference is that I didn’t keep going after more and more to feel good about myself. I got the ones I needed to succeed in the spaces I play in. Even then, I have rebelled a bit because at what point is it enough?
We wonder why we can’t get people for low-wage jobs when we require Bachelor’s degrees. Decent jobs want Master’s degrees, and any more, you better have a doctor’s degree just to be safe. A piece of paper doesn’t mean squat without emotional intelligence and work ethic folks, not to mention experience. No amount of college degrees is going to give someone the true legitimacy they seek. That bucket has a huge hole in it.
Each of us needs to recognize and acknowledge that the battle is raging on against us. We need to guard our hearts, minds and spirits, and we do that by staying close to God and His word. We can’t do this alone, either. We need to lock arms and bring with us the individual weapons God has given each of us. Some memorize scripture while others can sense the Holy Spirit. We need every weapon God has given us, and we need to start using them like we are at war because we are!
It’s a daily battle that we must continually fight. The moment we get lax or lazy, the enemy will strike. We will be left feeling worthless, unloved, useless and lost. Right now, too many people are walking wounded. They wonder why they never feel good even after getting one more piece of paper under their belt. It is up to us to point the way to REAL legitimacy, REAL love. It isn’t about what we do, the degrees we obtained or the accomplishments we achieve. We can’t earn this kind of legitimacy. It has been given to us as a gift.
I hope businesses will focus more on abilities, talents and experience and not on a piece of paper to help break the vicious cycle. Think about it, with today’s standards, Bill Gates or Steve Jobs wouldn’t stand a chance and wouldn’t even make the first cut for an IT job. Let that sink in!
I recruit people who will show up and not ghost you. I get you team members with work ethic and experience. If you are tired of the drama of turnaround, give me a call.
If you want to defeat the enemy, you must be willing to defy your diagnosis! My book shows you how:
