Want to know the importance of mentorship? Just ask Loretta Lynn. I recently watched the Lifetime Channel movie Patsy and Loretta (https://www.mylifetime.com/movies/patsy-and-loretta) I’ve always been a Patsy Cline fan as she had a unique sound that seemed to come from deep inside of her. After watching the story of her and Loretta Lynn, I just love her even more and was saddened all over again about her untimely death at the age of 30 in a plane crash.
Patsy Cline was famous before Loretta Lynn was ever on a stage. In fact, if it wasn’t for Patsy, Loretta Lynn would have never performed in the big leagues. Loretta grew up poor, lived with an abusive and controlling husband, and had a family. The movie chronicles their friendship and as it unfolds, you see the importance of mentorship.
As it often happens, a tragedy brought the two together. Patsy was in a horrific car crash, and Loretta came to the hospital to visit. A spark was struck between them, and friendship blossomed. Loretta was young, inexperienced, and uneducated…but she had talent. Patsy recognized her gift and instead of being jealous of it helped foster it. She coached Loretta on how to take her singing to the next level. Since Loretta couldn’t read, she reviewed contracts to ensure she wasn’t being taken advantage of by agents. She always had Loretta’s back with her best interest in mind.
Loretta was a true friend back to Patsy. Although Patsy didn’t need career advice, she relished in the companionship that she never really had growing up: unconditional love.
