As a behavioral consultant, I understand certain personality types resist time management while others just can’t seem to get all their ducks in a row. I thought I would offer another benefit and motivator for everyone to manage their time better: less stress and a happier life!
Yes, if you manage the things and events of your life better, you will have a higher quality of life. It’s a fact! Those around you will be happier, too, because your fires and emergencies won’t become theirs! Whether you are in the business world or at home, no one likes the pressures and stresses caused by the lack of planning or time management of someone else. It is beyond frustrating and creates tension where none needs to be. Life is crazy enough; don’t add to it by not being organized and prepared.
One great way to help stay on top of the day is to create a “To-Do” list. You can use apps on your cell or tablet like Astrid or put pen to paper…whatever works for you. However, when we list out our daily goals and tasks, we are more likely to stay focused on getting them accomplished. If you rely simply on your mind to remember, you will fail. Your mind will let you down because it will be running in a million different directions. A “To-Do” list gives order and clarity to your time and energy.
Another tip for reducing stress and creating a more balanced life is blocking out time to do like-minded activities such as phone calls. Use your calendar program to identify important items you want to dedicate a certain amount of time to and protect it! When it is marked like any other meeting, you won’t be tempted to ignore it. This is especially important to those who wish to write a book. You must carve out time every single day to write! Get – R – Done!
Lastly, quit multi-tasking. I am so sick of people talking on their cell phones while they are shopping. They end up blocking the entire isle way because they are clueless to the fact that anyone else is there, and they aren’t getting their shopping done. The same is true with driving. No one, and I mean NO ONE, should be texting or Facebooking on their phones while driving. You aren’t making good use of your time because nothing is getting your full attention.
How does this improve the quality of your life? When you get the tasks out of the way quickly, you have time for YOU! You can choose to spend your free time however you like instead of running late and behind. When you have down time, you can recharge and renew. This allows you to decompress and get ready for another day.
