We have been told as individuals that we aren’t hip if we aren’t on social media. As businesses, we’ve been told we will shrivel up and die if we don’t use social media. Meanwhile, relationships are being fragmented and broken. We’re becoming disconnected.
I feel like it is the scene from the Wizard of Oz when Toto pulls the curtain back on the Wizard, and he says into the microphone, “Don’t look at that man behind the curtain.” Yup, we’ve been duped. We’ve been sold a bill of goods.
Don’t get me wrong. I don’t believe “things” are evil. They are just things. It is the use of those things that makes them good or bad, and quite frankly, we’ve used social media for the wrong reasons. I think we started off with good intentions: sharing photos of our weekend and life events. We initially reconnected with lost school mates and distant relatives. It was exciting to see what people we cared about were up to. Unfortunately, it turned ugly.
Social media is dividing us and isolating us. We behave in ways we would never (I certainly hope) in person. We’ve become cowards because we won’t confront one another. Instead we post rants. We don’t reach out and help each other. We’ve gotten lazy and just click “like” or the sad face. Meanwhile, millions of Americans are lonely. If we don’t have something over the top to share, we feel unworthy. Facebook IS fake news.
Let me remind us all that Facebook was originally created to shame and bully ugly college girls. Don’t kid yourself that they had some altruistic intent to connect the world; they are all about making money and gathering your personal information. It’s a business, folks, and it has been at our expense. I’m not saying we all have to boycott it, but I know several folks who have and they don’t miss it one bit. They are much happier. Businesses who aren’t using it haven’t vanished. It’s just one channel is a world of limitless ways to make impressions. I think it’s time we put social media in its place.
