How are you doing with your 2020 goals? I know COVID-19 has derailed many a plan and has required most of us to pivot and readjust. Before we run out of year, I thought I would touch base on how to reach your goals in record time.
I’m going to assume that you first and foremost know “why” you want to achieve your goal because without a compelling reason, you will lose momentum at the first sign of struggle. Once you’ve identified your why, you have clearly defined the goal so that it is SMART: specific, measurable, action-oriented, realistic, and timed, right? My booklet Reach the Goal in Record Time! helps you with these steps, but what I wanted to focus on today is a time trap called “waiting.” It is in the top-five traps (as described by Stephen Covey) that stall progress, and this year has shown the power it has over us.
If I had a dollar for every time someone said, “I’m waiting for things to improve” or “I’m waiting for things to slow down,” I would be a bazillionaire! With COVID-19, we started off with just a two-week quarantine in March and waited. Well, it is the third week of October, and we are STILL waiting! What has been lost as a result? What opportunities did we miss? Life does not stand still; time presses on! We do not get that time back. Yet, many are paralyzed by fear waiting for a moment in time when it will be perfectly safe to move forward. We will NEVER live without risk! We will always have viruses and bacteria to contend with, and we can’t wait for them to be eradicated. We have to learn how to live with them.
It doesn’t have to be a pandemic that causes you to wait. Perfectionists wait until everything is just right while others wait on peer approval or a boss. Waiting is a typical part of life, like sitting at a stop light. What isn’t normal is sitting at the light when it turns green! Waiting, like anything else, can become habitual, meaning you are in a rut of just sitting and waiting it out. You have gotten out of the routine of moving forward.
What are YOU waiting for? Is it realistic to wait or will time just keep passing by without you achieving anything? Is there anything you can do while you wait for something specific? Can you focus your energies on a different goal or objective? Is there a specific aspect of your goal that can get attention now?
I encourage you not to wait but to do something—anything—toward moving you forward today. Take a small step like doing some research or making a phone call. Maybe you need to re-evaluate your goal entirely and create new goals that work within the new world we are living in. Regardless, DO SOMETHING! Time waits for no man.
PS Did you know a coach can help you set SMART goals? We can also be your accountability partner and keep you on track. We all need some encouragement and discipline once in a while. I’d love to help! Give me a call, and we’ll reach your goal in record time.
