Once again, I don’t know where we were and how we missed the show, Person of Interest (POI), starring Jim Caviezel. It ran from September 2011 to June 2016 on CBA, and we have been binge watching it on Amazon Prime.
The premise: After the 9/11 terrorist attacks on US soil, a man named Harold creates a machine that monitors everything we do and can predict terrorist attacks. The government gets a hold of it and uses it to watch our every move, and the original intent is to prevent horrific crimes. They call them “Relevant” events, and the machine notifies them when such an occurrence will happen. Everything else is considered irrelevant.
Well, Harold believes all crimes are relevant, and he hires a former CIA operative names John Reese, to help save lives. The show is blowing my mind because we are living out the concerns expressed in the show way back when! The machine turns AI and goes out on its own, making decisions of who to save and who to let die. It is interfering with elections, controlling Wall Street, and can shut down all utilities in a non-second, rendering the entire world hopeless.
I could take a deep dive into the ramifications of allowing AI full reign, but that isn’t the point I wanted to make with this blog. No, I saw a spiritual message. Both Harold and John, along with other recruits, decide everyone is relevant and worth saving. The machine represents satan and the evils of this world…hatred, greed, and self-preservation. Harold and John fight for human life.
I don’t know if Angel Studios used POI as a launching pad for their latest movie release, The Shift, but I am pretty sure they were fans. The Shift doesn’t hold back, and reveals the sneaky, slimy, and deceptive ways of satan in the world. The story is of one man who defies “The Benefactor,” as he likes to be called, and seeks God. He puts his faith in Jesus, and by praying, handicaps satan. That doesn’t mean satan gives up, and the movie is a rush of powerful scenes of good verses evil…real struggles, emotions, hardships, and victories. The conclusion of both POI and The Shift is God sees YOU as relevant. He didn’t discard any of us. In fact, He sent His one and only Son to bear the burdens of our wretched sins and die on a cross so that we may be forgiven and live in Eternity with God!
Yet, satan will make every attempt to make you feel unworthy, unlovable, and irrelevant, like a piece of garbage tossed to the curb. The opening scene of every POI shows says, “You won’t find us, but if your number comes up, we’ll find you.” Well, God knows exactly where you are, and He will walk with you. He is the answer to any question of doubt, and He trumps every fear.
What I have learned through my faith journey is that satan is found in the noise of the world. He is the pull to stick your face in your phone, the distraction from reading your Bible, and every conflict and disagreement. God, on the other hand, doesn’t force Himself upon you. He is found in the quiet. “After the earthquake came a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire. And after the fire came a gentle whisper.” 1 Kings 19:11-12 NIV
God is everywhere, but we will not hear or see Him if we allow the world to consume us. Remember, we live in this world but are not OF it (1 John 2:15-17). This is not our forever home! Be very careful to protect yourself from the ways of the world and concentrate on Godly things. “From now on, brothers and sisters, if anything is excellent and if anything is admirable, focus your thoughts on these things. Philippians 4:8 NIV
I encourage you to see the movie, The Shift, by Angel Studios. They are crowd funding their projects and rely upon our support to continue faith-based and moral-rich movies. You can see POI on Amazon Prime for free with a few commercials woven in. It has five seasons, and each season has 22 episodes. We are on season four, and we haven’t lost interest. If anything, we are enthralled and intrigued even more!
PS My booklet, Walking with God Through Difficult Times, is an excellent companion to both of these as it addresses the tough times we face and how God walks with us. Don’t fall for satan’s lies but rather embrace God’s truth!
