I’ve been a huge fan of DISC for 30 years and have been teaching its principles for more than 20. The insights gained build bridges, not walls, and help people be the best version of themselves. I wish someone would have given me this insight when I was in grade school. It would have saved me a lot of heartache as I grew up. I always wondered what was wrong with me and why I didn’t fit in; why couldn’t I be like everyone else? I thought God messed up when He made me. Little did I know I was Divergent. I didn’t learn things like others, and I wasn’t interested in the same things. I saw things from a unique perspective, and instead of squashing it, I should have celebrated it.
My parents didn’t have DISC knowledge, so they tried to turn me into a carbon copy of them. I was nothing like them, so it was painful. Parents – your children have style! They are unique and special, and chances are, they are not like you. If you have more than one kid, they are probably not alike either. What a boring place this world would be if we were all the same.
There are four (4) distinct categories: Strong-Willed/Fast, Social/Fun, Sensitive/Friendly, and Systematic/Factual. You may have an idea of where you child fits, but I have a full assessment in my Your Kid Has Style! booklet as well as additional tools to help you communicate better with your child.
Understanding your child’s wiring will change everything! You will realize that a one-size-fits-all approach to disciple does not work! Each child will respond differently to punishment. Want to save yourself the headache and battle of conflict? Know your child’s behavioral style and how to discipline them! Take the time to learn how they are made and how they view the world. Stop trying to squeeze them into your mold and embrace their uniqueness! Celebrating them as individuals frees them up to discover even more about themselves so they can soar and succeed in life.
As a coach, I can help! Allow me to reduce your conflict and increase closeness with your children. When we look at their strengths, we will also find out what sports and activities are well suited for them. We can even begin to discuss possible career paths where they will find great success based upon their wiring. Set your child up for success! Celebrate their style!
